Outdoor Wednesday: Hydrangeas

Mophead Hydrangea

I think hydrangeas are among the prettiest summer flowering bushes! My favorites are the mophead and lacecap varieties. Right now, they are in full bloom here in New England.

Lace Cap Hydrangea

Hydrangeas are fairly easy to grow and maintain. They prefer morning sun and afternoon shade. Hydrangeas grow best in rich soil, so compost the soil well before planting them. They also need to be watered well. Mulching the soil around them will help them retain moisture.

To keep your hydrangea in peak condition, remove about one-third of the oldest stems every year in mid-spring. Cut them off as close to ground level as you can. This will ensure lots of new blooms at the bottom and will keep your hydrangea plants healthy.

Did you know you can change the colors of the flowers by altering the soil pH levels? They will turn blue when you drop the pH level by adding some sulfur to the soil. Alternatively, you can turn the flowers pink when you raise the pH by adding some lime.

Now is a great time to buy hydrangeas. Many local nurseries and garden centers have marked down their perennial stock by 50%. You may even find them for as much as 75% off!

Hydrangeas are also beautiful dried. Susie Harris recently blogged about drying hydrangeas. If you haven't read it yet, you can find it here.

Thanks for stopping by!

Oh Jane, these hydrangeas are absolutely beautiful. I cannot believe how gorgeous they really are. This late in the season even. The colors are so pretty. Do you put anything on yours to change the color or make it more vibrant? It seems like Moma always sprinkled something on hers and it had something to do with the color? Childhood memory. Thanks for sharing this wonderful post. I signed up to follow your blog so that I can come back and see what you show next. Country Hugs, Sherry

Gorgeous!

There are some types we can actually grow here in Oklahoma. Once the corgis stop chewing everything in site I want to plant some.

I love hydrangeas, but don't think I've ever seen the Lace Cap variety before. Or if I have, I just didn't know what they were. Your photos are just gorgeous!

Jane,
I love hydrangeas and do not have the first one. I have to be careful what I plant because of all the deer.
Living in the country is really nice...I hope your "retirement" wish comes true!!

I have to say the same as everyone else - I love hydrangeas. My grandmother had them all along the front of her wrap around porch, and I have such good memories of her.

Mopheads?? We have two HUGE hydrangea plants in our backyard that are in full sun that bloom a bit more each year (I think they are about eleven or twelve years old), but they really look like the picture of the mopheads! I thought they just weren't blooming right...maybe that's how they are supposed to bloom?? We have two more smaller ones in the side yard that don't get the intense sun and they bloom into the balls. Hmmmmmm....... :>:>
